Head of Software Engineering required to join a growing software company in their Edinburgh City Centre office. You will be helping to build and grow an existing and successful tech team, during the organisation's continued success.
They are, first and foremost, a software company and you will be joining at a very important time. Over the past 12 months (and through Covid), they have witnessed their best year of sales and this is down to a growing list of clients and continued hard work. I should add that the business is also entirely self-funded! They are based out of central Edinburgh and have ambitious plans to grow as a company. Currently sitting at a headcount of around 60 across the business, you will be responsible for the whole Engineering function of currently around 30, however there are plans to become 50 over the next 12 months or so. This team includes Development Managers, Front and Back-End Software Engineers, Testers, Product Owners etc and you will be the senior point of escalation for this function.
The client list for this company is ever expanding and this varies from start-ups to large, global enterprises. With this growth has come a diversification of the client portfolio – an important point during these uncertain times. The teams operate in an Agile manor and this is promoted across the business. In terms of the solutions they provide, this stretches the full software lifecycle from Front-End web to API Development and Web Development.
Reporting directly into the CEO, you will be leading a wider team of currently around 30 staff, including a number of Software Development Managers. You will be tasked with successfully growing the function over the coming years and will ideally have experience in doing so. At present, the whole team is working from home (as per Government guidelines), however this is an office based position in the longer term and you will need to be comfortable working from the office, the majority of the time.
The position is both strategic and technical, with this person still having the opportunity to get involved in general architecture and setting up technical best practices. It would also be handy if you have prior client facing experience, as you will need to speak to clients at a highly technical level on certain projects.
Typically, the teams work across a diverse and wide-ranging tech stack. They understand that this person may be fairly tech agnostic, however it would be handy if you had knowledge of some of the following technologies: React/Typescript, .NET/Java, and Android/iOS technologies such as Kotlin or Swift.
This role would suit someone who has worked for a software start-up or SME with a product focus and one where there aren't too many set processes in place. This organisation isn't a large-layered, corporate business.
This is a unique opportunity in Scotland at the moment and if you are a Head of Engineering / Head of Software / CTO keen to make your mark in a growing company, get in touch with Hamish Niven at Cathcart Associates for a more detailed conversation
